Club scout Luis Boa Morte believes defender Shkodran Mustafi will prove to be Arsenal’s most crucial signing this season following his impressive start to the campaign, he told the club’s official website

The Gunners weren’t afraid to spend big in the summer as they looked to put last season’s failed title challenge behind them, signing the likes of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Perez and Mustafi.

Three players who predominantly play though the middle, Arsenal’s spine has certainly been strengthened not least in numbers but one in particular has really caught the eye so far this season.

Speaking to, club scout Luis Boa Morte believes Mustafi will prove to be a crucial addition this term and his presence in the absence of the injured Per Mertesacker makes him all that more important.

“I think Shkodran Mustafi will be the most crucial signing this season. He’s a Germany international who has shown he’s a very tough defender, and he can bring something new to the team with his tenacity,” Boa Morte explained.

“We’ve also had a few injuries in that position so that will definitely make him more important. I’m sure all of the signings we’ve made will go on to make a big contribution this season, but at the moment it looks like Shkodran will have the biggest impact because of the injuries we’ve suffered to Mertesacker and Gabriel.”

Mustafi has quickly formed an impressive partnership alongside Laurent Koscielny, helping Arsene Wenger’s side win seven of their last nine Premier League matches to surge up the table.

Many feel Arsenal have one of the strongest squads in the league now and the experience to finally win the Premier League title which has evaded them since 2004.

Mustafi, 24, was signed from Valencia having also had a previous spell at Goodison Park with Everton.
