Celtic have the best defensive record of any side in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Brendan Rodgers has told the Belfast Telegraph that Celtic defenders Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko have become his first-choice centre-back pairing.

There were concerns over the quality of the centre-backs in Celtic’s squad, during pre-season.

Rodgers acted to bring in Kolo Toure, after the experienced defender was released from Liverpool, but it already seems as if the summer signing will now be playing a back up role at Celtic Park.

“The reality is they [Simunovic and Sviatchenko] will probably be the two that play consistently, but we are having to manage Jozo because of his long-term injury and history over the past six months to a year,” he said.

Simunovic and Sviatchenko have been highly impressive during Celtic’s excellent start to the season.

The Bhoys are unbeaten in domestic action so far this season, and they have looked rock solid throughout the campaign.

Celtic have conceded just eight goals in their opening 10 Premiership matches, and they have established a nine point lead at the top of the table.

Simunovic and Sviatchenko look likely to start for Celtic in Rodgers’ side’s next match, which comes against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League.
