Harry Winks has been training with Tottenham Hotspur’s first-team for a considerable amount of time now.
Mauricio Pochettino has told the Hampstead and Highgate Newspaper that Harry Winks is now a trusted player at Tottenham Hotspur.
Winks has emerged as one of Spurs’ main up-and-coming talents, and he has been training with the first-team for a considerable amount of time now.
Pochettino called Winks up to Tottenham’s senior squad last season, and he has remained in the first-team set up ever since.
The 20-year-old has been handed a collection of substitute appearances, and he made his first senior start earlier this season – in the EFL Cup against Gillingham.
Winks now has increased competition to win a place in Tottenham’s team, following the arrival of Victor Wanyama in the summer, but Pochettino insists that he trusts the youngster to impress, if he is called upon.
“In the last games we played Victor like a holding midfielder. He [Winks] can play there because he’s strong enough to play in that position alone,” Pochettino said.
“I am happy with Harry Winks. I think he’s doing well. The pre-season was good, he showed very good skills. For me he’s a trusted player and, like against Gillingham, he played very well and maybe in the next few weeks he will have the opportunity to play again. It’s always important.
“He’s very young, he’s coming through the academy and he will be a very important player for us in the future.”
Winks could be handed his biggest opportunity yet, when Tottenham face Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
Pochettino has suggested that he will play some of Spurs’ brightest youngsters in the cup competition, and Winks appears to have an excellent chance of starting at Anfield.
