Spurs remained unbeaten but missed the chance to go top at the Vitality Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur ran out 5-1 winners on their last visit to Bournemouth, but on Saturday they came up against a much-improved home side and may end up looking back on this goalless draw as a point gained rather than two dropped.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked rusty in the first period and threatened to let their discipline slip, as four players were booked in what became a bad-tempered encounter. Spurs improved in the second half but could not find the breakthrough and had to settle for a point.

For details on how each player performed, see below.

Hugo Lloris – 7/10

The Tottenham captain’s almost miraculous saves have got to the stage where they are being taken for granted, with his latest fine stop denying Charlie Daniels early on.

The Spurs goalkeeper had little else to do at the Vitality Stadium, and remained a calming influence throughout due in large part to his safe handling and confident distribution.

Kyle Walker – 6/10

Faced a tricky test up against Jordon Ibe but held his own in the battle; Walker’s pace is invaluable against such opponents.

The England right-back was not as influential in attacking areas as he has been in recent weeks in what was an uncharacteristically quiet display from the 26-year-old.

Eric Dier – 7/10

Toby Alderweireld left big boots to fill in the heart of the Spurs defence, but Dier ensured the Belgian’s absence was not too keenly felt thanks to an assured display.

One late slip up when he nearly let in Max Gradel aside, Dier showed watching England manager Gareth Southgate that he is more than capable filling in at centre half if required.

Jan Vertonghen – 7/10

Stood up well to deny Wilson in the first period but the former Coventry man was a difficult opponent for the big Belgian, who was booked for a cynical foul on the striker.

Vertonghen impressed in the second half and threw himself into a vital goal-saving challenge on Max Gradel late on.

Danny Rose – 5/10

One of several Tottenham players to find his way into the referee’s notebook for a crude challenge late on in the first half, Rose struggled to have an impact on the south coast.

The 26-year-old was kept under wraps by Adam Smith on his forays forward, and his influence faded as the game went on; perhaps the midweek exploits took their toll on the England man.

Victor Wanyama – 7/10

The Kenyan kept things ticking over in the Spurs midfield and maintained his discipline well when his teammates were losing their cool at the end of the first half – no mean feat for a player who was sent off three times last season.

His midfield battle with Harry Arter was one the more intriguing sub-plots on the south coast, with neither man giving an inch. While he was not quite as destructive as in his man of the match performance against Manchester City, Wanyama can be content with his afternoon’s work on the south coast.

Mousa Dembele – 8/10

The Belgian midfielder stood out for the visitors with an effortlessly classy display in the Spurs midfield.

Dembele broke up Bournemouth attacks and also started his own through a mixture of strong running and clever passing. On a day when several of his teammates were slightly below par it was vital that Dembele was on his game, so Pochettino will have been impressed with the Belgian’s display.

Erik Lamela – 6/10

Arguably fortunate to stay on the field after an ill-disciplined first half display, Lamela also came closest to opening the scoring when his long-range effort hit the angle of post and crossbar.

Lamela continued to try and work openings in the second half but was largely frustrated, and also saw a late goal-bound effort blocked by Adam Smith.

Dele Alli – 6/10

The England man cut a frustrated figure in the first half, and was one of several to receive a yellow card.

Alli grew into the game as Tottenham began to dominate in the second half but couldn’t create anything of note for the visitors, and was withdrawn with 20 minutes to play.

Christian Eriksen – 6/10

A quiet display from the Dane, who tried to influence the game by coming infield during the first half but couldn’t quite work any clear cut openings for his side.

This continued into the second period, when Eriksen was largely on the fringes of the game aside from one marvellous touch to release Erik Lamela, an opening which ended up coming to nothing.

Son Heung-min – 6/10

The in-form striker was well shackled by Bournemouth’s centre backs in the first half, and found himself called offside on the rare occasions he escaped their attention.

Visibly tiring in the second period, the South Korean was taken off for Vincent Janssen just after the hour mark.

Substitutes:

Vincent Janssen – 6/10

Came on to add a more physical threat to Tottenham’s front line, but was equally frustrated by Cook and Francis. Held the ball up well on occasion but never looked like finding the net.

Moussa Sissoko – 5/10

The Frenchman has struggled to make an impact in a Spurs jersey thus far, a theme that continued on Saturday. May find himself sitting out the next three matches if his needless elbow on Harry Arter gets punished.
