England captain Wayne Rooney has been dropped by interim boss Gareth Southgate for tonight's World Cup qualifier with Slovenia.

England supporters have backed Wayne Rooney’s demotion to the bench for tonight’s World Cup qualifier in Slovenia.

The Manchester United man received boos from sections of his own support at Wembley Stadium on Saturday as he was deployed in a holding midfield role for Gareth Southgate’s side. Rooney has come in for criticism this season having looked out of sorts for both club and country and Southgate’s decision to bench him will have been welcomed by many.

Many fans have claimed that he’s ‘spent’, ‘finished’, ‘done’, highlighting the emergence of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard as a good reason for his demotion. Others have claimed he no longer has a ‘passion for football’.

Some have leapt to his defence however, claiming that while he no longer has the legs to be a striker, ‘he still has three strong years left in him as a midfielder’.

Others have highlighted the volume of goals he has scored for England as a reason to keep him involved with the first-team, citing his experience as ‘invaluable’.

A change of scenery was even speculated, with one fan claiming that he needs ‘to go somewhere where they love him’.

The 30-year-old has struggled for form and consistency this season, and has found himself out of favour at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho in recent times.
