Spurs enhanced their title credentials with a somewhat comfortable win over high-flying City, who had won all six of their previous league outings under Pep Guardiola.
Aleksandar Kolarov’s own goal after nine minutes represented an excellent start to the clash at White Hart Lane, before Dele Alli doubled the lead before half time.
Lamela could and should have wrapped the points up for Tottenham on 65 minutes, but a rather poor penalty made it easy for Claudio Bravo to keep out.
Before the spot kick, the Argentine was spotted in a mild confrontation with Son Heung-min over who would take the penalty, and perhaps Son, who had five goals in as many games before Sunday, should have taken it in hindsight.
Quite a few Tottenham fans were unhappy with the former Roma man on Twitter afterwards, while some also questioned whether Mauricio Pochettino should relegate him to a spot on the bench.
Spurs are not as short on wide options as they were last season and Lamela certainly has a fight on his hands to stay in Pochettino’s best XI.
