Aston Villa were beaten 2-0 by Preston North End on Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Johnson celebrates scoring for Preston

Aston Villa’s season went from bad to worse on Saturday as they lost 2-0 to Preston – and two of their former youngsters came back to haunt them at Deepdale.

Villa travelled to Deepdale in a bid to end a run of five successive draws, and whilst they didn’t get a draw, they were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline.

Ben Pearson’s early opener set the tone for North End, before Ashley Westwood was caught in possession by Pearson, with Jordan Hugill tapping home a second from close range.

Preston’s Callum Robinson

Villa fans were furious throughout the game, and the result eventually led to manager Roberto Di Matteo losing his job after just one win in the first 11 games of the season.

Villa have spent big money on new signings since relegation, but they all struggled at Deepdale – yet two former Villa youngsters proved the club wrong for letting them go.

Callum Robinson of Preston North End celebrates after the game

Playmaker Daniel Johnson and winger Callum Robinson both came up through the ranks with Villa, but were allowed to leave for Preston in cut-price deals in January 2015 and this past summer respectively.

Johnson enjoyed one of his best performances of the season as he was influential in midfield, whilst Robinson’s pace and trickery on the left hand side gave Alan Hutton no end of problems.

After the final whistle, Villa fans took to Twitter to react to their performances, with many ruing the club’s decision to let both players leave in favour of buying players who have offered very little, such as Westwood or Yacouba Sylla.

Others suggested that Johnson and Robinson were the only two players Villa fans should have cheered after a miserable performance from their current players, with supporters were left to deal with overpaid, underperforming players being overshadowed by former Villa youth team stars.
