The Tottenham winger explained his nickname and stated both a desire to score more goals and his favourite thing about living in London during a Q&A.
Tottenham Hotspur did a Twitter Q&A with Erik Lamela this evening, in which the Argentine was quizzed on whether he was enjoying life at Spurs, if he’s looking to add more goals to his game, his favourite part of London life and why he is nicknamed ‘Coco’.
Lamela had a very difficult start to life at Tottenham, having arrived at White Hart Lane following a big money move from Roma in 2013. The move made him the most expensive player in Tottenham’s history, a title he now jointly shares with summer signing Moussa Sissoko according to some sources.
His hefty price tag twinned with some labelling him as Gareth Bale’s replacement meant there was an awful lot of pressure on the then 21-year-old’s shoulders. Despite his struggles, he showed glimpses of brilliance, and he is now maturing into a top class player for Spurs.
When asked if he was enjoying playing in such a young and talented Tottenham team, Lamela replied by saying, “Yes, I feel very well here, all of the people are really nice with me. They help me a lot so I enjoy it every day to be here.”
The next question aimed in the 24-year-old international’s way enquired as to whether Lamela was focussing on scoring more goals this season. He replied, “Yes of course, I want to score more goals this season. I will try in the next few games and always if I can score I try to do something.”
Lamela scored 11 goals last season, his best return yet in a Tottenham shirt, although only 5 of those came in the league, compared to the 15 league goals he scored in his final season at Roma, suggesting that there is more to come from the player in front of goal.
The Argentine, who was reportedly once offered a Messi-esque move to Barcelona as a youngster, went on to state what is his favourite thing about ‘life in London’. The winger claimed, “My favourite thing is always training. I love to train, to come here.”
“After I have a life with my girlfriend. I like to go for dinner, to enjoy my dog at home or my friends and family when they come.”
Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased to hear Lamela call training his favourite thing about living in London, even if it isn’t exactly exclusive to ‘London life’.
The last question posed to Lamela enquired, “Why does everyone call you Coco?”. To which the tricky wide man had a simple answer, “Because my family, when I was a baby, they called me Coco, I don’t know why.”
That was it for a somewhat unusual and brief Q&A session with the Tottenham star, who will be hoping to start this weekends game against Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Whether Pochettino is brave enough to start with all five of Son, Eriksen, Lamela, Alli and Janssen remains to be seen, but Lamela certainly made a strong case for himself in Tottenham’s midweek victory away at CSKA Moscow.
