The Champions League is the most prestigious club competition in Europe. Every season the competition sees Europe’s elite lock horns, and as such, it tends to include Europe’s wealthiest, most talented and most followed clubs. This week, global index platform for sports brand values Brandtix used their algorithms to reveal the most valuable clubs and players in this years Champions League.

Reigning champions Real Madrid came out on top, with Cristiano Ronaldo unsurprisingly being their most marketable player. Barcelona were a close second, with Neymar’s enormous appeal in South America seeing him rank as Barcelona’s most marketable man, ahead of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

Three English clubs ranked among the top 10, with Arsenal coming in third, only one place but some distance behind Barcelona and almost neck and neck with fourth place; Bavarian giants Bayern Munich. Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur also made the cut, although only just with Spurs, who came in tenth place, whilst Premier League champions Leicester City missed out altogether.

In total, the top 10 features three English teams, three Spanish teams, two German teams, one French team and one Italian team. The full list of top 10 teams reads; Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Juventus, PSG, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

There are some hugely valuable teams who miss out by virtue of not having qualified for the Champions League, Manchester United being the most obvious example of this, still ranking as the world’s third most valuable club despite their recent lack of major success. Chelsea, Liverpool and AC Milan would all also rank among the top 10 had they qualified for the competition.

The results show the immense wealth and popularity of the Premier League, when even without the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, three English sides still rank among the top 10. Tottenham, in tenth place, still rank higher than much more experienced and established European giants such as Porto, Lyon, Napoli, Sevilla and Ajax. There aren’t too many surprises with regards to each clubs most marketable player. Some Arsenal fans may be surprised to see Mesut Ozil rank higher than Alexis Sanchez, but his popularity in Germany, Turkey and England makes him more marketable than Sanchez, who is revered in Chile, but the South American nation has a relatively small population.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane is ranked as the least marketable player among the top 10, partly down to his social media following, which is dwarfed by every other player in the top 10. Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus is extremely marketable, as shown by the German winning a global poll to become FIFA 17’s cover star.

Despite having reached two of the last three Champions League finals, Atletico Madrid still find themselves behind the likes of PSG and Manchester City, and only narrowly ahead of Tottenham, none of whom have experienced that much success in the competition.
