Find out the most accurate players at Norwich, Newcastle, Sheffield Wednesday, Fulham, Leeds, Aston Villa, Wolves and the rest of the Championship.
No player has higher shooting accuracy than Jonny Howson in the Championship
One of the major differences between the Premier League and the Championship is how clinical players are in front of goal. Whilst a team may get away with making a handful of mistakes in the Championship, where players can at times be rather wasteful, the same mistakes will be punished nine times out of ten in the Premier League.
As such, the teams who are the most ruthless and clinical in front of goal in the Championship are often the teams who succeed. Shot accuracy does not equate exactly to being clinical or even good in front of goal, as a shot which trickles into the goalkeepers arms is classed as on target but caused no threat, whilst one which cannons against the post is off target, but far closer to actually scoring.
Four players with more than five shots on goal have a 100% shot accuracy rate in the Championship so far this season, and they are players from Norwich City, Barnsley, QPR and Blackburn. Those four clubs represent quite a broad spectrum of the Championship, as the 2nd, 10th, 16th and 22nd placed teams respectively.
Will Grigg is Wigan’s most accurate player
The most accurate player from the league leaders Huddersfield is on-loan midfield star Aaron Mooy, who has been arguably the outstanding player in the Championship so far this season, and has a 67% rate of hitting the target.
Second placed Norwich City have the joint most accurate player in the league in the form of Jonny Howson, who has hit 100% of his efforts on target. Third placed Newcastle’s most accurate man is somewhat surprisingly not summer signing Dwight Gayle, but rather former Bournemouth star Matt Ritchie, who has found the target with 75% of his strikes on goal.
The other three players with 100% shot accuracy are Barnsley’s Tom Bradshaw, QPR’s Conor Washington and Blackburn’s Marvin Emnes. The full list of each teams most accurate player is below, please note that it only includes players with 5 or more shots to their name this season:

Brighton’s Anthony Knockaert has the worst shooting accuracy of any team leading player
The 24 players regarded as the ‘sharpest shooters’ statistically at each team in the Championship have scored an impressive 55 goals between them, although only 6 of the 24 are actually their teams current top scorers in the league.
Only 3 of the 24 have drawn blanks all season, namely Reading’s Stephen Quinn, QPR’s Connor Washington and Derby County’s James Wilson, who is on-loan from Manchester United. The top 24 include two of the league’s three joint top scorers (Bristol City’s Tammy Abraham and Brentford’s Scott Hogan) with Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle missing out (Gayle has 56% shot accuracy).
Leeds United fans may be surprised to see Chris Wood not named as their representative on the list, given that the New Zealand international has scored 5 goals in the Championship this season, but he only has 48% shot accuracy, the lowest of any player with 5 or more goals in the division.
Leeds United’s Chris Wood has scored 5 goals this season
Behind the quartet of players with perfect shooting accuracy this season, the next highest ranked player is Sheffield Wednesday forward Gary Hooper. A consistent and quality striker at Championship level, Hooper had one of the highest shooting accuracy percentages last season too, and Sheffield Wednesday fans will be hoping his goals can power them to another promotion push.
Wolverhampton Wanderers on-loan striker Helder Costa is their best placed player. The 22-year-old Portuguese youth international has only scored once for Wolves this season, but his 75% shooting accuracy suggests more goals could be on the way.
Arguably the most impressive player of the 24 is teenager Ryan Sessegnon. The 16-year-old wonder kid became the first player born in the 2000’s to ever score in the Football League earlier this year, and he now has 2 goals for Fulham as well as being their sharpest shooter in front of goal.
