Derby County fans have responded on Twitter to news of Nigel Pearson’s suspension ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Cardiff City.

The Rams confirmed the reports, first published by the Sun newspaper, exactly three hours before kick off on their official club website.

A statement read: “Derby County can confirm that Manager Nigel Pearson will not be carrying out his duties at tonight’s game at the request of the club.”

According to the Sun, there is to be no way back for Pearson, whose sacking is imminent, while Steve Bruce has been mooted as a potential replacement.

Pearson, the former Leicester City and Hull City boss, took charge of Derby in the summer, but despite finishing fifth last season, the Rams could end the night bottom of the Championship, with one win and three goals scored in their nine league matches so far.

After Saturday’s home defeat to Blackburn Rovers, Pearson told the BBC he was prepared to drop players in favour of those who “want to show the levels of commitment and are prepared to go whatever distance it takes to get the result”.

The Derby board, however, appear to view Pearson as the problem and Rams fans, for the most part, do not concur, posting strong messages about both the players and chairman Mel Morris.
