Sky Sports Soccer Saturday duo Phil Thompson and Paul Merson have questioned West Ham United’s decision to sell James Tomkins this summer.

The defender left the Hammers in the summer transfer window as Crystal Palace took him to Selhurst Park in a £10 million deal.

He has been sorely missed in the heart of their defence so far this season as the Hammers have picked up just one win in their first five games.

Their defence has particularly struggled with them conceding 13 goals, the third worst record in the division behind Stoke City.

And both Merson and Thompson have questioned the decision to let Tomkins leave the club in the summer.

“I was quite surprised they let James Tomkins go, I always thought he was rock solid and you knew what you were going to get from him,” Thompson told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

“There was no real value in selling him, I didn’t really get it,” added Merson.

A look at the stats from last season shows that West Ham were probably wrong to let Tomkins go this summer.

On a per game basis, he won more tackles than any other Hammers defender last year and was also in the top two when it came to interceptions won and defensive duels won.

Those stats show that letting him go may have been a mistake and if their defence continues to perform as poorly for the remainder of the campaign, it will continue to look like a poor decision from Slaven Bilic.
