West Ham beat Accrington 1-0 on Wednesday evening.
West Ham United avoided embarrassment on Wednesday evening as Dimitri Payet’s injury-time free kick handed them a 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup.
The Hammers went into the game desperately searching for a victory after losing 4-2 to both Watford and West Brom in their last two Premier League games.
A game against League Two side Accrington seemed like the perfect way for West Ham to get back to winning ways, but they again struggled even against John Coleman’s side.
West Ham toiled away looking for a winning goal, and as the game neared extra time, star man Dimitri Payet whipped home a superb free kick to send West Ham through by the skin of their teeth.
The Hammers have now set up a last 16 clash with Chelsea, and will hope that they’re win – albeit a narrow one – will give them confidence heading into Sunday’s home clash with Southampton.
After the final whistle on Wednesday evening, West Ham players took to Twitter to send messages to supporters, with summer signing Alvaro Arbeloa celebrating making his debut for the club.
Goalkeeper Darren Randolph – stepping in for Adrian – admitted he was pleased with a win and a clean sheet, and also commented on being captain during the game.
Midfielder Pedro Obiang noted that the win could be the catalyst for improved results in the Premier League, whilst Simone Zaza stated that he was happy to get some minutes under his belt, and hopes the goals flow soon having yet to find the net since joining from Juventus.
