The Chelsea legend believes there is no one better in the position than Chelsea’s current number seven.

Claude Makelele believes N’Golo Kante is the best in the world at the defensive midfielder position, but also thinks he has to work to do in order to fully perfect his game, according to a report in Goal.

Kante was the lynchpin of a Leicester City side that won the Premier League title last year, before moving to Chelsea for sizeable fee this summer.

Former Chelsea man Makelele is widely regarded as the innovator of the defensive midfielder position across spells at Real Madrid and Chelsea, providing an unbeatable presence in the middle of the park and providing balls to advanced attackers with ease.

With Kante beginning to show his worth to Blues manager Antonio Conte’s side, Makelele believes the 25-year-old is currently the best in the world at the position he helped revolutionise.

“It is a position where it is difficult to play,” he said. “You must be a leader. You must work with your team-mates in midfield.

“I like N’Golo Kante, but is he better than me at this? I do not know. He still needs time to fully learn the job, to learn about football.

“He is a young player I really like, and I hope he will be better than I was.”

Kante certainly draws similarities to Makelele in his style of play, and the France international will want to provide an influence akin to Makelele for Chelsea as the Premier League season progresses.
