The midfielder scored a superb goal in the Newcastle United’s 6-0 rout of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s team.
Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has told to the Chronicle that he often tries to score goals like his one against QPR in training but admits 99 per cent of the time they do not come off.
The midfielder was in fine form in midweek as he played a key role in their comprehensive 6-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.
He scored arguably the goal of the evening when he struck a delightful curling effort into the top corner of Alex Smithies’ goal.
It was a superb strike from him and perfectly demonstrated the confident mood he is in at this moment in time.
It is easy to imagine it is something he has practiced often and Shelvey admits that is the case but most of the time it does not result in a goal.
“For my second, I quite often try that sort of effort in training and 99 per cent of the time they don’t come off!” he told the Chronicle.
“But if you don’t try them, you won’t score. I’m not one to shy away from a shot so I’m just grateful it nestled in the far corner like it did.”
Magpies manager Rafa Benitez will now be hoping that Shelvey has more goals like this one in his locker this season.
Newcastle are currently second in the Championship table with 15 points from their first seven games.
The win over QPR was their fifth on the bounce as the likes of Shelvey have started to settle into life in the second tier.
They will be keen to continue that fine form when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park this weekend.
