Rangers assistant manager David Weir has told Sky Sports that they will preach to the squad to stay in control in the clash with Celtic.

The Gers travel to Celtic Park this weekend for the first Old Firm derby of the season.

It is a highly anticipated affair, being the first league clash between the rivals since Rangers were demoted down the divisions four years ago.

Both sides will be determined to secure victory, especially as they are both looking likely to challenge for the title this season.

Whoever can remain calm and composed will be the side that comes out victorious and Weir has said that is what he and Mark Warburton will be preaching to the Rangers squad.

“We are looking forward to this game, everyone is talking about it,” he told Sky Sports.

“This game is important but you have to treat it the same way as you would other matches. We preach to the players to be in control and make the right decisions at the right time so it’s obviously heightened in this game.”

One man they will likely be making the point to more than most is midfielder Joey Barton.

Much has been made of the summer signing coming up against Celtic star Scott Brown, with the midfielder himself ramping up the tension with a series of comments about his rival.

He will be keen to prove himself as a result but both Weir and Warburton will have to make sure that is done in the correct manner to ensure their plans not going awry.
