The Republic of Ireland international has seemingly lost his place in the Everton midfield to summer signing Idrissa Gueye, and his future was placed into doubt on deadline day.

It's stated that, having missed out on Sissoko's signature, Everton blocked McCarthy's proposed season-long loan move to Selhurst Park, even after Palace agreed to pay a £3m loan fee for the player.
The 25-year-old has made almost 100 Premier League appearances for the Toffees since signing from Wigan Athletic in 2013, and would have been a shrewd signing for Palace having sold Mile Jedinak to Aston Villa earlier this summer.

The report adds that Palace will renew their interest in McCarthy in January as they look to reunite him with his former Hamilton and Wigan team-mate James McArthur.
However, in the time between now and January, Palace will look free agent stop-gaps, with former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini the club's current target in a bid to add some Premier League experience to the midfield after Jedinak's exit.
