West Bromwich Albion have made a sensational late move in the transfer market by offering a club-record fee of around £21 million for Portugal and Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Albion’s summer had been fizzling out until this week, with QPR winger Matt Phillips and Everton defensive loanee Brendan Galloway the only additions made by Tony Pulis.

However, a club-record £13 million deal for Tottenham Hotspur winger Nacer Chadli was completed on Monday, and the Baggies now could be set to immediately smash that barrier again in the final hours of the window.

The Birmingham Mail reports that the club have made an offer of around €25 million (£21.3 million) for Portugal’s defensive midfield star Carvalho.

The 24-year-old has been a regular for club and country over the last three years and starred in the side which won Euro 2016 this summer.

He has been linked with various European clubs in recent times, but it is Albion who are hoping to make a real statement of their intent to move forward by securing his signature.

The report claims that their bid has not been rejected and that they are instead waiting for a considered response from the Portuguese giants.

West Brom had been linked with Ignacio Camacho, but it is thought that they have now switched their focus to Carvalho, although they could return to the Spaniard if a deal for the Portuguese cannot be completed.
