Another player associated with the miserable recent years at Aston Villa departed on Saturday as the club announced that centre-back Jores Okore has left to return to his native Denmark by signing for FC Copenhagen.

Okore joined Villa from his home country three years ago with a growing reputation, but failed to ever live up to anywhere near the standard hoped for during his time at Villa Park.

A big factor in that was injury; the defender managed just a month of action in his debut season before suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament which ruled him out for 14 months.

Though he made 26 appearances in all competitions in his second season following his return, he played just 10 times last term in a miserable campaign which ended in relegation for Villa.

The 24-year-old also made headlines in the final weeks of the season by refusing to serve as a substitute in a clash with Bournemouth and subsequently telling then-caretaker manager Eric Black that he did not want to be considered for any further games in the 2015-16 season.

Roberto di Matteo gave Okore a second chance this season in the EFL Cup first-round tie with Luton Town, but Okore was part of a shocking defensive display which included him scoring a disastrous own-goal.

After that terrible mistake summed up his decline in recent times, many Villa fans were not shedding any tears over the centre-back's departure.

The main concern voiced by Villa fans, however, was that the departure of Okore, along with the exit of Ciaran Clark earlier this summer and the anticipated departures of at least one of experienced pair Micah Richards and Joloen Lescott leaves the club very light on central defensive options with the transfer window closing on Wednesday.
