Sheffield Wednesday have allegedly opened talks with Argentine left-back Leonel Bontempo.

A report in Wednesday's Sun newspaper (page 51) claims the Owls are keen on the 23-year-old after failing to land Joe Bennett from Aston Villa.

Bontempo began his career at Quilmes in the Buenos Aires province and played 53 times before ending his contract this summer, following what the Sun describes as a "bitter dispute".

It is unclear if Bontempo qualifies for an EU passport which would allow him to play in England, given that he is yet to be capped at international level and therefore unlikely to be granted a work permit.

Wednesday's deal for Bennett, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Hillsborough, was blocked by Villa chairman Tony Xia at the eleventh hour, with the 26-year-old having already agreed terms and passed a medical with the Owls (Birmingham Mail).

Xia later tweeted: "RDM (Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo) chose the team & board made decisions not giving out for free especially to a rival! No more silly deals !

"I just want to protect a club,no more stealing from the club, which we should done long time ago!"

Bennett, whose contract expires at the end of the campaign, has not played a single minute of football for the Villans this season.

The former Middlesbrough defender is currently behind Aly Cissokho and Jordan Amavi in the pecking order.
