Could Arsenal sign the Atletico Madrid star this month?

Arsenal are in talks with Atletico Madrid to sign centre-back Jose Gimenez, according to The Mail.
The Gunners are down to the bare bones regarding defensive options and lost 4-3 to Liverpool on Sunday in a game which saw Premier League debutant Rob Holding, 20, partner 21-year-old Calum Chambers in the heart of their defence.
There was a toxic atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium that day as some Arsenal fans chanted, ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ at Arsene Wenger, whose perceived dithering in the transfer market is perhaps partially responsible for that defeat.

The North Londoners have been linked with Valencia centre-back Shkodran Mustafi for a number of weeks, though The Telegraph claim that Wenger is reluctant to meet his £30 million valuation.
That being said, The Mail have reported this evening that Arsenal have turned their attentions toward the Atletico Madrid man, with Wenger in talks over a £40 million deal for the 21-year-old Uruguayan.

The report goes on to suggest that Gimenez – who managed 37 appearances under Diego Simeone last season – is willing to join a London-based Premier League side.
The South American is young, but vastly more experienced than Holding and Chambers. He was on the fringes of the Atleti side which were crowned Spanish champions in 2014, and started seven Champions League games as Simeone’s side reached the final of the competition last term.
