Fulham’s Fernando Amorebieta celebrates scoring their second goal

Fulham defender Fernando Amorebieta is poised to return to Spain to join Sporting Gijon, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Amorebieta was a target for Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez as an alternative to Grant Hanley before Newcastle finally completed a move for the Blackburn defender.

Amorebieta’s future at Fulham has in doubt for some time with the Venezuelan international having spent time on loan at Middlesbrough during the past two seasons.

Fulham are happy to let Amorebieta leave on a permanent basis this summer rather than risk letting the defender run down his contract and leave for free next year.

Amorebieta joined Fulham from Athletic Bilbao in 2013 and has made over 50 appearances for the West London side.

The move to Sporting Gijon marks a return to Spain for Amorebieta with the defender having spent 10 seasons at Bilbao prior to his move to Craven Cottage and helped the La Liga club reach the finals of the Europa League in 2012 and Copa del Rey in 2008 and 2012.

Amorebieta will prove a valuable addition to Sporting Gijon as he can play at centre-back and left-back and his experience will be key for the club next season in La Liga.
