Speaking to the Daily Mail, Lincoln Red Imps star Liam Walker has stated that his side’s recent triumph over Celtic is a bigger result than the Hoops claiming victory over Spanish giants Barcelona a couple of years ago.
Celtic suffered arguably their worst defeat in recent memory after going down 1-0 to Gibraltar club Lincoln Red Imps in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers first leg on Tuesday night.
Considering the fact that Lincoln Red Imps’ side mostly consisted of part time footballers, some of whom actually went to work at their regular jobs during the day of the match itself, the defeat has been widely panned as an embarrassment for a huge side such as Celtic.
Even before the regular season in many countries has started, the result is being considered as one of the biggest shocks of the campaign and now Lincoln Red Imps star Liam Walker has gone on to claim that his side’s victory over Celtic is a historic one.
Walker told the Daily Mail, “No matter what happens now we’ve made history. It will go down as one of the great results in football. Lincoln’s name will now go all over the world. We’ve really put the club on the map.”
Drawing comparisons with Celtic’s own famous 2-1 upset victory over Barcelona in the Champions League back in 2012, Walker then went on to add that Lincoln Red Imps’ triumph is a bigger result than that of the Hoops.
He continued, “Celtic play in the Champions League most seasons and they beat Barcelona not so long ago - but this is bigger than that for us. I remember watching that game and thinking it was an amazing result. But this is probably an even bigger shock to be honest.
“We’re just a small team from Gibraltar. We’ve only been playing in Europe for three years. There are guys in the team who were working on the day of the game. It’s incredible when you think about it.”
Is the defeat against Lincoln Red Imps the worst in Celtic's history?
