Celtic lost 1-0 to Lincoln Red Imps in Champions League qualifying last night.
John Hartson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 13th July, that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers should never have picked Efe Ambrose to play in the Champions League against Lincoln Red Imps last night.
Celtic took on the semi-professional side from Gibraltar, and they were expected to win with ease.
However, the Bhoys were delivered a nasty shock in Rodgers’ first competitive game in charge - as they fell to a 1-0 defeat.
Ambrose looked all at sea throughout the fixture, and he was partly at fault for the goal that his side conceded.
Hartson now feels that Rodgers should not have picked Ambrose, as he had better options to play at centre-back in reserve.
“Efe Ambrose shouldn’t be anywhere near a Celtic shirt,” the former Celtic striker said. “Last season there was six or seven occasions when he cost them dearly.
“Surely Brendan has seen last season’s videos? Ambrose was at fault for a lot of the big games. Why is he still going with him?
“They had Lustig on the bench, Bitton can slip into the back four - but they keep going with Ambrose. He did a lot to cost Ronny Deila his job.”
Ambrose has always been prone to errors throughout his time at Celtic, and his future appears to be in serious doubt after his performance last night.
The 27-year-old defender has been linked with a move away from Celtic, and Rodgers is unlikely to stand in his way if significant offers come in.
Celtic take on Lincoln Red Imps in the second leg of their qualifying tie next week at Parkhead.
