Reports on Thursday saw Mehdi Abeid linked with a surprise return to Newcastle United this summer, sparking plenty of debate among fans on social media.

The Algerian, who only played 14 times for the Magpies during his previous four-year spell, has enjoyed a fine season with Greek side Panathinaikos, scoring three goals in 24 games.

His impressive form has earned him an international recall, and his current club are now reportedly open to the idea of cashing in on him this summer.

Reports linking him with a return to the Tyneside will come as a surprise to many, although the 23-year-old allegedly never wanted to leave St James' Park.

With a reported £3 million price tag, boss Rafael Benitez could well be tempted to bring the former Lens academy product back to the club.

And judging by the reactions posted on social media, a number of Newcastle fans would be ready to welcome Abeid back to Gallowgate.
