Former Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid could be in line for a return to St James Park, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo.

The 23-year old enjoyed an excellent campaign with Panathinaikos last season but could be set for a quick exit after joining from the Magpies just last summer.

Porto are rumoured to be one of the club’s interested in his services but O Jogo’s report suggests the Portuguese giants are unlikely to make a move, while Newcastle are interested in reuniting with the talented Algerian.

The Magpies are gearing up for a return to the Championship and have been boosted by Rafa Benitez’s desire to remain at the helm, but attention will now turn to ensuring the squad is prepared for life in England’s second tier.

The coming months are set to be a busy period with the likes of Andros Townsend and Moussa Sissoko possibly heading for the exit door, as reported by the Guardian and Foot Mercato respectively, and incomings likely to follow.

The Toon Army will be hoping for a swift return to the top flight and Abeid could be Benitez’s first step in tailoring his squad for challenge of Championship football.
