Newcastle United have been linked with the Fulham man and should do everything they can to sign him.

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United will step up their attempts to sign Ross McCormack in the coming weeks, and the truth is the Fulham front-man would be the perfect signing for the Magpies.

Rafa Benitez’s side will be hoping to secure a return to the top flight at the first time of asking, having slipped into the Championship after a woeful campaign, and one thing that will be key is the presence of a prolific striker.

As things stand Newcastle have Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez, Adam Armstrong and Aleksandar Mitrovic, and while the latter could be a big hit in the second tier his temperament means he is always a risk.

The Serbian was sent off twice last season, the second instance meaning he will miss the start of the next campaign, and with six dismissals in his relatively brief career to date he is a player who always walks the fine line between brilliance and lunacy.

In contrast McCormack – eight years Mitrovic’s senior – has only been sent off twice in 419 matches and he knows how to score goals at this level, having found the net 21 times in the Championship last season and also providing 10 assists.

That is the kind of player Newcastle need and while Mitrovic may prove to be such a man, McCormack undoubtedly is.

With three years left on his Fulham contract McCormack will not come cheap, but he will know just what a big club Newcastle are and if he can fire them back to the top flight he will have the chance to play Premier League football for the final few years of his career.
