Three Cheers For Cake

Tea Sandwiches

One can always find an excuse for cake, but the Queen's 90th birthday is our favourite, and one we're going to use all season.

It’s hard to imagine a person doing the same job with such tenacity and charm for so very long. But Elizabeth II promised this as a young, beautiful woman, and she has kept that promise. We salute a woman of such strength!

London hotels have seized the opportunity presented by the Queen’s birthday to lay on a fine spread to spoil her subjects: cute pastries, inventive canapes and super-douper cocktails. A nice way to celebrate, isn’t it?

Tea Sandwiches

No hotel has done a better job than the Marriott in Park Lane – just around the corner from Buck House (as we insiders call it). They even recreated the Queen’s favourite cocktail (which somehow I remember was also the Queen Mother’s fav, too), a Dubonnet and Gin with a dash of lime juice. We tucked into beetroot toast bread with smoked salmon, poppy seed bread roll with coronation chicken, and basil toast bread with cucumber with relish. Delicious, all of them!

And we didn’t hesitate a moment before tasting the little macarons, waffle cones, mini eclairs and various other delicious goodies.

Our lovely hostess, Victoria, beamed with pleasure at these two ladies enjoying themselves so much.

The Lanes restaurant has updated this most essential of English meals, the Afternoon Tea, and made it into a modern deliciousness. And it's perfect to cap with a cocktail.

Many happy returns, Your Majesty. May you long rule over us!
