Chris Sutton refuses to believe Newcastle to keep Benitez reports

Chris Sutton says he still has doubts Rafa Benitez will stay at Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are edging closer to convincing Rafa Benitez to stay, according to multiple reports in the papers today.

The Mail report Newcastle are confident the Spaniard will manage the club in the Championship next season, claiming positive talks were held on Monday.

Benitez took charge after Steve McClaren was sacked late in the season, but it was too little too late despite a handful of good results.

Former Premier League ace Chris Sutton is not buying claims Benitez will stay at Newcastle, telling BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday night he believes he would have committed his future publicly already if so.

He said: "I'm sure he will be off, I cant see him staying. He was managing Real Madrid  five months ago, I still think he wants to manage at the highest level, getting out of the Championship might not be straightforward.

"Albeit positive reports today until it gets over the line I just cannot see him staying."

Sutton's arguments may hold merit, Benitez is a manager capable at a far higher level than England's second tier, but the club's supporters appear to have made a strong impression on the Spaniard and decisions are never quite straightforward.

The tide appears to be moving in the direction of Benitez staying, and while it perhaps seems improbable in the regards Sutton points out, Newcastle might just be close to making it happen.
