Celtic were keen to sign Rangers linked star Niko Kranjcar in 2010, 2006, £6m price tag too expensive

Celtic have been previously linked with potential Rangers addition Niko Kranjcar.

Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar is close to signing for Rangers, the Daily Record report, with manager Mark Warburton flying to New York to hold talks with the midfield star.

This is not the first time Kranjcar has been linked with a move to Scotland, previously connected with a move to reigning champions Celtic twice over the past decade.

The Times reported in 2010 that Celtic placed Kranjcar high on their list of signings, aiming to lure him away from Tottenham Hotspur.

This move fell through with Celtic unable to afford the £6 million Tottenham were demanding for his signature, nor his £45,000 per week wages.

Kranjcar was also claimed by The Times to have been scouted by Gordon Strachan's coaching staff in 2006 while he was still playing in Croatia with Hadjuk Split.

31-year-old Kranjcar currently plays with New York Cosmos after signing a short term deal earlier this year.

He has more than 80 international caps to his name, and has been a favourite of former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp, who signed him for Portsmouth, Tottenham, and QPR.
