Former Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar comments on his future

Should Villa attempt to bring the Dutchman back to Villa Park?

Aston Villa will be playing in the Championship next season after a poor season in the Premier League has seen them finish bottom of the table and reduced to second-tier football.

The club never truly replaced some of their key players in the summer – with Fabian Delph and Christian Benteke both leaving the club for Premier League rivals.

But one departure that is often overlooked was that of Ron Vlaar. His form and fitness was not great toward the end of his Villa career but he was still a Dutch international and highly-rated.

He left in the summer on a free transfer, underwent knee surgery on a long-standing problem, eventually joining former club AZ Alkmaar in December after being given the all-clear.

He is contracted until the end of the season and now the former Villa player has been speaking about his future.

Vlaar is quoted by RTV NH as stating:

"I am now thirty-one. I want to play football very much and I really want to achieve something with a team that. I feel that the team that wants it. The future will tell.

"I really do not dare to say (if I’ll stay at AZ). For this you need two parties. I know that AZ wants and I'm also in favor. So we'll see.

"I really do not know."

His future at AZ does not seem assured so should Villa consider trying to bring him back for next season?

He has proven his fitness now and Villa would surely be able to pay the wages that AZ are currently paying him.

His signature would be a great move from the club ahead of the Championship and is surely an avenue they must consider.
