Jose Fonte has talked to Oxlade-Chamberlain about Southampton return

The Arsenal winger has been linked with an exit this summer.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has told just-football that he has spoken to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain about a potential return to the club.

The winger has been linked with a move away from current club Arsenal this summer, having failed to properly realise his potential at the club.

A series of injuries have played their part in limiting his game time considerably, while the competition for places at the club has not helped his chances.

One of the clubs linked with a potential move is former club Southampton, who he left for the Gunners in 2011, and Fonte has admitted that he has discussed a return with him former teammate.

“I know Chambo [Oxlade-Chamberlain] from Southampton,” he told just-football.

“We played together when he was 15 or 16. So I’ve known him for a long time. I know how good he is. I’m not going to lie we talked about it. But what can I say? He’s an Arsenal player.”

“He has the quality to be a star player at Arsenal, no doubt about it. But what I mean is we would love to he him back. If we want to put out a team to fight for trophies, why not?”

A move away from Arsenal this summer makes sense for Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer, with his career somewhat stagnating in London.

He has shown flashes of his quality for both club and country over the years, but needs to be a regular starter if he is to be the star many anticipated he would be.

What is undeniable however is if he is put on sale by the club this summer, there will be a host of clubs trying to sign him, and Southampton will likely be among them.
