Report: West Ham interested in Turkish right-back Gokhan Gonul, available on a free transfer

Fenerbahce's defender is keen on a move out of the club this summer.

West Ham United boss Slaven Bilic is set to use his links in Turkish football to make a move for a right-back this summer.

A report in Turkey is suggesting that Fenerbahce right-back Gokhan Gonul is a major target for the Hammers this season.

Sabah is reporting that Gonul is hoping to make a move away from Turkey this summer. West Ham are said to be keen on the player, who impressed Bilic during his time managing at Besiktas.

Gonul has over 50 caps for Turkey and has been a regular at Fenerbahce since joining the club from Hacettepe in 2007.

His arrival would certainly be welcomed. West Ham have a good squad but bringing in a right-back would be a shrewd move.

Sam Byram is still an unproven quantity at this level whilst Carl Jenkinson’s time at the club appears to be up.

The likes of James Tomkins and Michail Antonio have played well when asked to play at right-back, but it is not their first position, whilst Joey O’Brien is expected to move on in the summer.

Gonul is an experienced defender and is out of contract in the summer.

This would be a cheap and necessary signing from West Ham, as they look to build on their excellent campaign next term.
