Paul Merson backs Brighton and Middlesbrough to pip Burnley to Championship promotion

The former Boro player believes Brighton will join his former club in the Premier League next season.

The Championship promotion hunt is heating up as the top three look to have broke away from the chasing pack in the battle for the top two places and a spot in the Premier League from next season.

Middlesbrough currently lead the way after five wins on the bounce whilst Burnley, who have just one win in their last four games are in second spot just two behind Boro.

Then lie Brighton and Hove Albion. The Seagulls are unbeaten in nine and just two points behind Burnley ahead of their meeting with Fulham in the Championship this evening.

The Championship promotion race is now attracting the gaze of several TV pundits who are making their predictions for the climax of the second tier.

One such pundit is Paul Merson.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ earlier today (15/04/16) the former Middlesbrough star made his prediction for the two teams to go up from the Championship this season.

He backed his former team, but believes that Brighton will be able to usurp Burnley in the promotion places:

“I’m going to go with my old club Middlesbrough.

“You know what, I might go with Brighton. I say that because I really fancy Brighton tonight to win. Even though I have said Burnley to win tomorrow there will be severe pressure on them to win that game, more then what there should be.

“So I’m going to go with Brighton with Middlesbrough.”

If Brighton were to earn promotion it would be a fantastic achievement from Chris Hughton and his team especially considering the quality of Burnley and plenty of the other teams in the promotion hunt who have fallen by the wayside.
