Report: Mehdi Abeid, sold by Newcastle United last summer, open to North-East return

The Algerian international was sold to Panathinaikos last summer.

Newcastle United are looking nervously at a potential drop out of the Premier League, especially after the recent defeat against relegation rivals Norwich City.

If they do drop down a division, they will need to consider making some changes to their first-team and one potential option appears to have come up today.

According to a report in the Chronicle Newcastle could bring back a former player this summer if they wanted him.

The report claims that midfielder Mehdi Abeid is open to a return to St James’ Park – as he enjoyed his time with the club.

The report claims that the Algerian is open to a move to Newcastle, even if they are relegated to the Championship, despite apparent interest from the likes of Porto, Marseille and Valencia.

Newcastle sold the 23-year-old to Greek side Panathinaikos last summer, a club where he has previously been on loan, after Steve McClaren decided he was not in the future plans of the club.

Abeid has since gone on to impress in Greek football and it seems he could be on the move once again this summer.
