Aston Villa defender Leandro Bacuna gets first senior international call-up for Curacao

The Dutch-born utility man has struggled for Aston Villa this season.

Aston Villa defender Leandro Bacuna will not come out of this season with much credit. The 24-year-old has struggled to perform consistently for the club this season and has not been a favourite with the fans because of the way he has interacted with the Villa faithful.

However, now it looks as though the Villa star is all set for an international call-up!

The former Groningen star is a former Dutch under-21 international, but he will not be playing for the Netherlands.

Instead he has agreed to play his international football for Curacao, currently managed by Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert.

Bacuna formerly played for the Netherlands Antilles under-18s. The country is no more - breaking up in 2010 and the island of Curacao now play international football on their own merit.

Now reports in Holland, including from NOS, are stating that Bacuna will represent the country in upcoming games against Barbados and the Dominican Republic.

He joins Southampton defender Cuco Martina and loaned out Sheffield Wednesday defender Darryl Lachman in the squad.

Bacuna will be hoping that time away in the Caribbean will help him forget his Aston Villa woes for a while.
