Sky Sports pundit makes an interesting comparison between McClaren and Allardyce

Steve McClaren

Paul Merson compares Steve McClaren’s current situation to that of Sam Allardyce’s at West Ham United.

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Steve McClaren’s current situation at Newcastle United reminds him of Sam Allardyce’s at West Ham United.

Allardyce was the manager of West Ham for four years from 2011 until the end of the 2014-15 season.

The Englishman, now in charge of Premier League outfit Sunderland, was not too popular with the Hammers’ fans, especially towards the end of his tenure.

McClaren is not very popular among the Newcastle fans at the moment, with the Magpies fighting to avoid relegation to the Championship at the end of the season.

“[McClaren] is up against it,” Merson told Sky Sports. “It reminds me of Sam Allardyce at West Ham. The crowd, whatever you do, it doesn't make any difference.”

The Newcastle fans are frustrated at the moment, and rightly so. After all, the Magpies are currently second from bottom in the Premier League table and could find themselves in the Championship next season.

McClaren is a very good coach and a good manager, but he does not seem to have any idea how to stop the current rot at Newcastle.
