Zinedine Zidane explains what he told Real Madrid about Steven Gerrard

The Real 'Galactico' urged the club to sign the midfielder when he was in his prime at Liverpool.

Zinedine Zidane says he wanted to play alongside Steven Gerrard at Real Madrid but believes Liverpool were lucky the club legend wanted to remain at Anfield, according to Shortlist Magazine.

Indeed, Zidane has picked Gerrard in his all-time Premier League XI.

And the Real Madrid boss told Shortlist: "For a time he was the best midfield player in the world. I told Madrid I wanted to play alongside him but he was loyal to Liverpool. That was lucky for them, because he was a pleasure to watch and the complete midfield player."

Gerrard has recently been discussing the Reds and his experiences of cup finals.

He insists Jurgen Klopp is essentially made of the same stuff as so many managers who have already won trophies with Liverpool - Rafa Benitez, Kenny Dalglish and Gerard Houllier.

Hopefully for Liverpool fans, that comes true on Sunday afternoon. People may belittle the Capital One Cup but winning a trophy means so much.

After all, Manchester City won it in their first season under Manuel Pellegrini and it gave them a boost before they lifted the Premier League title. Jose Mourinho did the same with Chelsea last campaign.

Winning a trophy can be the first step for Liverpool - then success can come in other competitions as time goes by.
