Martin Keown gives honest assessment of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain; highlights areas he must improve

The Arsenal winger still has plenty of work to do before he is the finished product.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has given an honest assessment of Gunners winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in his latest column for the Daily Mail.

The 22-year-old has featured 33 times for Arsenal this season but there are fears over his short-term future after he had to leave the field early in the second half against Barcelona earlier this week.

The severity of the injury remains to be seen but Arsenal fans will be hoping it is not as bad as feared.

When asked about the young winger, Keown did not hold back in his comments and Oxlade-Chamberlain may be wise to read what the former Gunner had to say.

“We saw an improvement in his defensive game on Tuesday (against Barca) and this has been long overdue,” Keown told the Mail.

“He has a habit of standing and admiring his work after playing a good pass and firing a shot on goal. He is often slow to move back into position as the game moves on around him.

“He needs to keep working on his game when he’s out of possession.”

They are wise words from a player who knows what it takes to succeed at Arsenal and fans will no doubt be hoping Oxlade-Chamberlain ultimately becomes the player he has the potential to be.

With 14 goals and 21 assists in 149 matches for Arsenal so far he has shown more than just glimpses, but now it is all about consistency and that could make or break his chances of becoming a superstar.
