Carlos Carvalhal explains Aiden McGeady's absence from Sheffield Wednesday's squad

Aiden McGeady is currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Everton.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has told BBC Radio Sheffield that Aiden McGeady was not in his match-day squad against Preston North End due to injury.

Many were surprised when the Everton loanee was not even given a place among the substitutes at Deepdale, but Carvalhal suggested that the winger’s omission was due to injury.

McGeady has picked up a knock on his leg, but Carvalhal expects the 29-year-old to be available again on Tuesday night for his side’s match against Queens Park Rangers.

“He received a kick on the leg,” the Portuguese boss said. “He is not 100 per cent. We expect that he will be available on Tuesday, but today he was not available. Tuesday he will be fit.”

McGeady has made a bright start at Wednesday since joining on loan from Everton in the January transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland international has already made three appearances for the Owls and they missed his creativity on Saturday.

Wednesday were unable to break down a resolute Preston team, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Simon Grayson’s men.

Wednesday are now in sixth place in the Championship table, and will be under pressure to bounce back against an out of form QPR in midweek.
