Newcastle fans slam Thierry Henry on Twitter after controversial comments

Thierry Henry does not think that Newcastle United are a big club.

Newcastle United fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to have their say on Thierry Henry’s comments about the club.

The Arsenal legend controversially said on the Sky Sports Now show on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning (February 12) that Newcastle are not a big club.

“I played there, they are very, very demanding,” said the former Arsenal striker. “I think are dying to see a successful team. They had one in the 1990s but didn’t manage to win the Premier League.

“Having a big stadium and big fanbase doesn’t make you a big club. It’s what you have inside the stadium and how many trophies you have that makes you a big club.

“So the capacity of them being a big club is definitely there, but are they a big club really? You have to show your trophies. How many titles or cups did you win?

“I am not saying that just about Newcastle, it goes with everyone. You have to show what you have one. They have the potential to be a big club, definitely, those fans are amazing. It is always hard to play there, but big club? I’m not sure.”

Henry’s comments are controversial, as Newcastle are widely regarded as a big club. The Premier League outfit regularly get over 45,000 fans for their home games at St. James’ Park.

However, the Magpies are not a successful club and also got relegated to the Championship in 2009.

Steve McClaren’s side are struggling for survival in the English top flight at the moment and are currently just a point above the relegation zone.

Newcastle fans are hugely passionate, and Henry’s comments understandably did not go down well with them.

Following the Frenchman’s remarks, Newcastle fans took to Twitter to have their say.
