Tottenham Hotspur are currently in third place in the Premier League table.

Phil Thompson has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, which was broadcast on February 2nd, that Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are the two players that Tottenham Hotspur have built their success around this season.

Spurs have had the best defensive record of any team in the Premier League, having let in just 19 goals in their first 24 matches.

And Thompson believes that Kevin Wimmer could have a tough task stepping into the side in the coming weeks, with Vertonghen set to be out with injury.

“These two have been rock solid in the centre of the defence, it’s what the title charge has been built on the back of,” Thompson said. “The understanding between the pair has been terrific. It’s going to be difficult [for Kevin Wimmer].”

Vertonghen picked up the knee injury while playing for Spurs against Crystal Palace, and he could miss the next eight weeks of action.

Pochettino’s side have made a good start to life in the Belgian’s absence, though, as Wimmer helped them keep the clean-sheet in a 3-0 victory over Norwich City in midweek.

That victory has move the Lilywhites up into third place in the Premier League table – ahead of their North London rivals Arsenal on goal difference.

Tottenham are also only five points away from top of the table Leicester, with their next fixture coming against Watford at White Hart Lane.
