Former Manchester United boss was smiling at the side's display.

Sir Alex Ferguson beamed in delight as Manchester United swept Stoke City aside at Old Trafford to record a comfortable victory.

Current boss Louis van Gaal has rightly come in for plenty of criticism in recent months, but this was a display worthy and reminiscent of one of Ferguson's old teams.

Mark Hughes' Stoke City were a shadow of the team which beat United at the Britannia Stadium, and offered little fight as the Red Devils surged into a commanding first half lead through goals from Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

Part of United's problems this season have stemmed from an inability to score early, but that was no issue last night.

United need to go on a run of good form if they are to qualify for next season's Champions League, and successive wins against Derby and Stoke will provide big confidence boosts, particularly for the manner of the displays as well as the results. If Sir Alex is smiling again, United are doing something right.
