Robbie Savage offers his opinion on Andros Townsend’s price-tag

Andros Townsend joined Newcastle United from Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Former Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage revealed on the BBC Radio 5 live 606 show on Saturday evening (January 30) that Andros Townsend is not worth £12 million.

Townsend joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur last month on a five-year contract.

According to BBC Sport, the Magpies had to pay the North London outfit a transfer fee of £12 million in order to secure the services of the England international winger.

Savage does not believe that Townsend is worth £12m and said on the BBC Radio 5 live 606 show on Saturday evening (January 30): “Townsend hasn’t completed 90 minutes for two years, I heard, goes for £12m, similar fee to Jordan Rhodes. (I know it’s different) The fees in this day and age are ridiculous.”

Townsend has struggled for playing time since last season, and he was clearly not rated by Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The Englishman is a decent player, but it is obvious that he has to prove himself all over again.

Is Townsend worth £12m? Probably not, but it was not he who determined it. Spurs wanted £12m and Newcastle paid for it - it is as simple as that.

Newcastle are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 21 points from 23 matches. Steve McClaren’s side are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.
