The days of United's current manager are gone. If the club can't see that, fans should be very, very worried...
Louis van Gaal looks lost.
The Manchester United manager seems like he wants to retire - the way he sets his team up certainly suggests it. But, at the same time, the Dutchman appears too proud to take the fall. A job like this probably won't present itself to Van Gaal ever again so why should he jump before he's pushed?
The club's hierarchy need to step in. Saturday's Southampton loss is just a step too far. Last season, the Saints won 1-0 at Old Trafford. This time around, no progress.
Van Gaal seems to know he is beaten. So why wait until his contract's up at the end of next season? And why even wait until the end of this season?
The Manchester United head coach has lost his way, his players don't seem to listen to him anymore, he can't set his team up to attack properly and is far too negative when he wants to tighten things up at the back.
There's only one man United need to look to - and, for once, he's available...
Indeed, whatever people will say about Jose Mourinho, no one is better suited to the United job than the Portuguese coach. His biggest weakness is the fact he can't seem to succeed without spending huge amounts.
And yet that's exactly what Manchester United need. Look at how much the club have spent with Van Gaal in charge and you see that, with his contacts in world football and nous when it comes to building winning teams, Mourinho would simply thrive at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal, meanwhile, looks like the worst manager in global sport when it comes to spending huge sums, even if Ed Woodward is to blame for a lot of the negotiating.
Get Mourinho in now and Manchester United can still salvage their season - and maybe even sign a couple of worthwhile players before the window closes.
