Ivan Toney watches former club Northampton Town win 3-1 as Newcastle United toil

The striker was out of action for the game with Watford.

Newcastle United took on Watford in the Premier League today with The Hornets desperately in need of a win to stop relegation chatter after a poor start to 2016.

Watford had not won a game since before Christmas in the league and that certainly had fans concerned about their safety.

However that run is over as they defeated Newcastle 2-1 to seemingly stave off talk of the drop.

Goals from Odion Ighalo and Craig Cathcart did the trick for Watford - with Jamaal Lascelles strike for Newcastle proving a mere consolation.

Newcastle however find themselves in real trouble.

One man who was not involved on the day was young striker Ivan Toney. He confirmed on Twitter earlier in the day that he would not be in attendance - as he would be watching his former club Northampton Town in action as he was injured:

The Cobblers were certainly the team to back today, as they won 3-1 at Sixfields v Morecambe.

Toney has not been a regular at Newcastle since his move from League Two, as was expected - he is considered more as a future talent.

Hopefully he will start seeing his current team pick up some wins in their fight for survival.
