Dimitri Payet discusses Premier League Player of the Year talk

West Ham star Payet has been considered a Player of the Year candidate.

Speaking to the official West Ham website, Dimitri Payet has admitted that he is still behind some of the truly top class players in the search for the Premier League Player of the Year award.

When asked if he is a realistic winner of the award, Payet said: “I hear there’s already been some chat about footballer of the year and to be compared with the likes of [Sergio] Aguero and Mesut Ozil is obviously pleasing. I think, nevertheless, that they're a little bit ahead of me right now, but it’s touching to be compared with such players.”

Payet might believe that he is behind Aguero and Ozil, but that is modesty speaking.

He has far excelled Aguero - who has been struck down by injury for much of this campaign - and whilst Ozil has been one of the best players in the division, he is expected to be.

Payet arrived at West Ham over the summer as one of the best creative players in Europe, but with many doubting his ability to cut it in England.

He has far exceeded expectations, and even if he is not classed as the best player in the division, he is undoubtedly the best signing of the season so far.

For his value in relation to his output he has been a fantastic purchase, and if he continues on the same upward trajectory for the rest of the year then he has to be considered for player of the season.

Payet may not have the name of Aguero or Ozil to him, but he has been one of the best stars in the Premier League this season.
