Remi Garde's men left it late to see off the League Two side 2-0 in Tuesday night's FA Cup third round replay at Villa Park.
Ciaran Clark finally had something to celebrate amid his disappointing season on Tuesday night as he opened the scoring to help Aston Villa edge past Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in their FA Cup third round replay.
The Republic of Ireland defender headed home an Ashley Westwood cross 15 minutes from time to spare Villa’s blushes after the visitors had come close to taking the lead on a couple of occasions either side of half-time through Garry Thompson.
Substitute Idrissa Gana then sealed the result just before stoppage-time, firing in from the centre of the box following Rudy Gestede’s neat lay-off to secure Remi Garde his second win in charge of the club and set up a fourth round tie at home against Manchester City.
Much like the 1-1 draw at Adams Park earlier this month, Villa were far from convincing against a side sitting 54 places below them in the football pyramid, but merely avoiding an upset was crucial for their confidence ahead of Saturday’s trip to Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
The players certainly seemed satisfied with the victory, with goalscorer Clark and rested goalkeeper Mark Bunn both taking to Twitter after the match to celebrate the team’s progress through to the next round of the competition.
