Jamie Redknapp says Newcastle ace Georginio Wijnaldum has been transformed since position switch

Jamie Redknapp has been impressed with Georginio Wijnaldum's recent performances.

Jamie Redknapp has told The Mail he is highly impressed with the recent performances of Newcastle United attacker Georginio Wijnaldum.

The former PSV Eindhoven star is the club's top goalscorer this season with nine Premier League goals, and netted at the weekend in the 2-1 victory at home to West Ham.

Wijnaldum also scored in midweek against Manchester United, and Redknapp credits his impact to a change of position.

He said: "Early in the season, Steve McClaren was using Georginio Wijnaldum almost in an old fashioned inside-left position. Now he’s playing just behind the striker and he has been a revelation.

"He was sensational against Manchester United and West Ham. In that role he looks a completely different player. He did not come cheap at £14.5million but at long last he is starting to show his value.

"He has boundless energy and is so dangerous when he arrives in the box — he looks like scoring almost every time."

Newcastle paid a big amount for Wijnaldum, and getting him more involved is essential. The Dutchman would not have expected to be involved in a relegation fight when he signed in the summer, but so far that is how it has been.

Currently the club are in 17th place, and the hope is from here that they will go on a run and start rising up the table.

If Wijnaldum continues his scoring streak then there is every chance they will, and regardless of where they finish, he looks like a good investment and can hold his head up high.
