Steve McClaren's response when asked whether Newcastle United will be busy in January

Newcastle United have been linked with a range of players ahead of the January transfer window.

Steve McClaren has refused to be drawn over whether Newcastle United will be busy in the January transfer window, when quizzed on his transfer plans by the Chronicle.

Newcastle are currently in the drop zone in the Premier League, and there is an expectation that they will strengthen in the new year to attempt to avoid the drop.

However, McClaren was keeping his cards close to his chest, when asked whether Newcastle intend to be busy in January.

“I really couldn’t tell you that at the moment,” he said.

“We have been focused a lot on the games – it has been a busy period.

“Discussions will go on all the way through, starting from today onwards. As I say, it will be kept private.

“All the names bandied about, I don’t even know half of them.

“I don’t know where you are getting your information from or where the names are coming from but for once your sources aren’t very good.

“We will see. We will do our business in private and carry on because we have a big game on Saturday.”

Newcastle have been linked with a range of players ahead of the January transfer window.

Targets such as Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey and Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend have been linked in the Daily Mail, while ESPN suggest that they are still interested in Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.

McClaren is likely to be looking for additions at both ends of the pitch, as problems exist throughout their squad.

The Magpies have conceded far too regularly, while they have have also found things difficult going forward - with none of their strikers hitting the back of the net with much regularity.
